I am back and excited about the 2012 golf season. The Florida schools were great! However, on a sad personal note, I had to leave briefly in February to attend my grandmother’s funeral. After the schools ended, I spent a week in Phoenix with the top golf, mental and strength experts in the world. I am looking forward to sharing what I learned and I will be tailoring my instruction programs this year with that in mind.
florida golf schools
In Florida we helped everyone get better and also had a great time. The house was nice and big so we ate in quite often. The golf courses were in good shape. We traveled to Reunion, Rio Pinar and Ridgewood Lakes for a few of the sessions. In the future we will try to visit different clubs a couple of the days. So far the response for next year is very positive, with most people returning. Rick, Ashley and I are always talking about ways to improve the schools. Next year we plan to take the instruction a little farther into the afternoon, have some off course instruction and create some situations on the course to cover, for example, different lies.
The World Scientific Congress of Golf
The World Scientific Congress of Golf in Phoenix was awesome. Did you know 98% of golfers early extend? Early extension is the loss of forward spine tilt during your swing. It is the single most common difference between PGA Tour players and the rest to the golfing population. I learned a lot about mental preparation, how the brain works, power, technique, what the best players in the world are doing, and the best teaching skills to relay the information to clients. One important point dealt with your spirit of the game: What is your spirit for playing golf? Frank Thomas, who made all of the equipment decisions at the USGA for many (20) years asks: If you could get a driver that hit it 300 yards straight down the fairway every time, would you want it? Everyone would want that driver, the problem is now everyone is in the middle of the fairway 300 yards from the tee. Now what? The question then becomes why do we play? Stay true to the spirit of the game.
Pia Nilson and Lyn Marriott have their tour players hit balls and love them no matter where the ball goes. Think about it, if our ball goes a little off line we complain; their players have to love where the ball goes no matter what. I’m asking you to do the same. Let’s get away from complaining about golf shots; when we do, it predisposes us to hit another stinker and complain again. If you love all your shots no matter where they go, you have a chance to hit a great shot the next time.
I am also working with a sports psychologist I met at the PGA show. One of the most powerful things that helps me is to have a post shot routine. I make sure I leave the shot with a positive image, no matter the result.
