About Me

I am back for a great Florida Golf School season.  We had fun, everyone got better and working out of Reunion has proven to be much better.  Now it is time to get started with the season at home.  It would be nice if the weather would break and we could play golf in short sleeved shirts.  I am excited about the tournament season starting.  The juniors have started their practices and looking forward to events including Drive Chip and Putt and PGA Junior League.  PGA Junior league is set for a big increase with the effort from PGA.  The coaching teams are off to a good start with a new team starting Tuesday evenings at 6pm.  I will also cover balance and its importance to weight distribution.

Florida Schools

Though I have not set the dates for the Florida Winter Schools next year now is a good time to share some things we learned this past year.   1) I am amazed at how creating a process and sticking to it helps everyone.  There are so many emotions you go through during your round and they influence how you play.  It is not necessarily talent or ability that dictate how well you play.  2) The students loved the nicer home and better golf courses.  3) Rick is a great one-handed chipper and putter.  His surgery was successful so next year he will have both arms and will be ready to play.  4) We need to expand our corporate efforts.  It is great to work with GOJO and have learned a lot from our relationship.  If you are interested in our Florida Winter Schools send me a note to golfclubmd@gmail.com

Boys and Girls Golf Club

The Boys and Girls Golf Club at Paint Branch is underway with Tots on Saturdays at 9am and Juniors over the age of 7 at 10am.  We will have specific practices for Drive Chip and Putt and our efforts to improve the kids still include fitness, functional movements, skills and on course instruction.  The Club will lead the PGA Junior League.  We expect growth in the PGA JL participation.  If you are not familiar, it is awesome for kids of all levels.   It is competitive and fun in a team environment.   We have a welcoming event scheduled for Saturday April 23rd 3:00pm at Paint Branch, please join us.

Chris Custom Coaching

Last year I started my own private coaching business.  I create teams that play together at many golf courses.  I assess their games, set scoring goals and create homework cards focused on their needs.  The idea is to practice with a purpose, if we can improve the areas we identify that hinder low scores we will create lower scores.  I gave so many lessons to folks that couldn’t take it to the golf course.   I also had students that would continue to go to the range and hit balls, there is no growth in trying to hit 7 irons 170 yards on the range unless you want to be good at hitting 7 irons 170 yards.  The problem is there are not many golf courses out there that have all 170 yard shots into a field.   The coaching is guaranteed to lower your scores or I will teach you for free until we reach our goals.  If you are interested send me a note to golfclubmd@gmail.com

Balance

I bought the Boditrak mat at the PGA show.   The mat measures heel/toe pressure throughout your foot and weight distribution between feet during the swing.  A few observations so far 1-there should be some load into your trail foot.  2- stability lends itself to equalizing the heel/toe pressure through the transition from the backswing to the downswing.  I have said many times I believe the person that designs golf shoes hopes you use all the cleats.  3-there should be weight transfer to the lead foot at impact.   We used it in Florida and since we only had 3 days together we focused on these 3 components.   We found if we made golf swings that achieved theses goals the shots were good.
Before we talk about how to improve our balance lets talk more about why.  Your golf swing is a rotary movement that starts from the ground as its base.  If the base is not stable something is going to be compromised, which leads to injury and loss of power.  I will cover power in the next newsletter once you have improved your stability.

To improve our stability start off the course
1-ankle stretches including toe circles (tip toe down and rotate your ankle)
Windshield wipers (sit on a bench heel down/toe up and rotate ankle back and forth
2-one legged toe touches
3- one legged shoulder turns in golf posture
4-daily balance exercises spend time on one leg

Driving range drills
1-one legged swings in balance
2-feet together swings
3-swing on your toes only, heels only
4-toe tap at finish (after your shot be able to tap the toe of your trail foot)

ONLY SWING AS FAST AS YOU CAN MAINTAIN YOUR BALANCE

I hope this helps your golf game.
