About Me
Spring has been busy. I’ve been juggling my responsibilities at Paint Branch while trying to find the practice time needed to prepare myself for competitive golf. The adult and junior development programs are doing great and it is awesome to see everyone’s improvement. I have also received much positive feedback from my Florida School students on this winter’s balance and finish focus and I will touch upon this later in the newsletter.
On the health front this winter I had been playing well in Florida but then I got sick. I was diagnosed with a liver virus. I had jaundice, fatigue and digestion challenges. After trips to 2 specialists, a Homeopathic doctor and 2 months of rest they still could not identify a cause. Thankfully my enzyme counts are back to normal now and I feel fine. Hopefully with less drinking and a better diet I will stay healthy.
Golf-wise, I have been struggling with my game. I think it’s a combination of the amount of practice, what I have been working on and mental focus. For example my ball striking has been poor and I’ve had rounds where I’ve only hit 3-5 greens in regulation. To fix things, I first worked on where the ball hit the face and once this improved I then moved on to distance control. Mentally, I find I get ahead of myself. Even though I work hard and practice staying in the present “now,” many times my focus on the shot itself suffers… But I’m working on it! … Enough about me!
Paint Branch Girls and Boys Golf Club
Let’s talk about the Boys and Girls Golf Club - our long term junior development program that includes functional movements, fitness, golf skills and etiquette.
First off, Arjun won the match play championship by nipping Jason 2 up. This spring we have spent extra time working on strength and functional movements and I know it’s hard to quantify the kids’ improvement unless you are with them often, but they are improving! A couple of examples I would like to share: Suli (age 7) knocked it on the front fringe in 3 shots on hole #1 (343 yds) and Arjun’s work ethic has changed for the better from “how do I get by” to “how do I give a little extra/I want to get better.” And to start our season off we won our first PGA Junior League match against UMD. It was exciting to see all the kids play well.
Adult Development
Next, the Adult development program is based on a supervised practice plan that includes biomechanics, golf skills (full swing, short game, putting), on course instruction and etiquette. Effective for all levels of players with a general understanding of golf, every session includes: some kind of physical movement beyond stretching, a golf skill and practice utilizing the golf course, the short game area and video.
A Note about Balance
I think balance is the key to a repeatable, powerful swing. Since we know that most shots are not from a level platform and your body is at a different angles, balance is a must. Here at the Performance Center we can measure your balance with a TPI screen and create a custom plan to improve it. To be a better golfer you need to work on your balance both on and off the golf course.
Balance Exercises
On the practice range add these drills to improve your balance:

Balance Exercises
On the practice range add these drills to improve your balance:
- Hit balls on one foot switch feet
- Toe taps after every shot, tap the toe of your trail foot.
- Rainbow passes, pass a lightweight (med ball, 5-10lbs) over your head while standing on one leg.Keep your knee hip high while you pass the weight back and forth 5-10 times and switch legs.
- Resisted lunges: hook your exercise band into the door shoulder height, stagger your feet parallel to the door, create a manageable resistance with the band and your hands out in front of you and lunge (10 reps), switch sides.
